United, we create lasting change!

DRS

Greetings,

United Way continues to be a force of lasting change for families in Cambria, Somerset — and now Blair — counties, from before birth to adulthood.

Your investment in our Community Impact Process empowers a game plan — from a united group of our partners — that meets our area's priority needs. Last year, your support helped us to again serve more than 58,000 people. Some of them were provided help to keep their heat on during the winter. Others were provided food, medical or mental health care.

Our core work remains a priority: Early childhood development, parental engagement and youth drug and alcohol prevention. Your investment is used for evidence-based programs that ensure babies are born at a healthy weight, children have up-to-date immunizations, and that other developmental benchmarks are met. By funding Botvin LifeSkills education in schools across both counties, you are helping us to make certain that one of the nation's top addiction prevention programs is helping more than 7,000 kids learn how to make healthy decisions.

Our growing Diaper Bank has become a crucial service, last year supplying more than 34,000 diapers to families across our service area. About 1 in 3 families fall short by about 25 diapers a month.

It’s part of the way that, united, you help us to provide great impact, both now and for future generations.

You can continue to be a part of this success story. Please consider a gift today to our annual campaign, helping us to sustain these transformational programs for the future.

EXCITING GROWTH!: New programs implemented by United Way (SNAP at the Market and the UWLH Diaper Bank) in 2022, are continuing to expand. On average, 30 people redeem SNAP benefits at the Johnstown Farmer’s Market each week, ensuring they have the buying power to purchase fresh, local produce. More than 5,000 diapers a month are provided to families in the United Way’s two-county footprint, helping to address the need for the 1 in 3 families who fall short by about 25 diapers each month. These programs are largely supported by grants and in-kind diaper donations.

A BIG UPDATE from United Way this year. We have merged with United Way of Blair County, and will be transitioning to the name United Way of the Southern Alleghenies. This will not change the way/amount we fund local programs. We expect our expanded footprint to allow us to leverage more resources, and to grow the services we provide locally. We are better together, and will now be able to help more people than ever before. Please reach out to Rick Kazmer (rick@uwlaurel.org) if you have any questions.
