When You Give, Lives Change!

Greetings,

Last year, programs funded by the United Way of the Laurel Highlands touched more than 58,000 lives in Cambria and Somerset Counties — a 40% increase over the previous year.

Families were helped through programs that address food security, homelessness, health care and mental health. Our core work focuses on early childhood development, parental engagement and youth drug and alcohol prevention, investing in evidence-based programs that have proven success.

The Nurse-Family Partnership program starts working with first-time, income eligible moms by providing a registered nurse who visits the mom bi-weekly, from 28 weeks before birth until age 2, offering physical screenings, health counseling and advice. After age 2 our Parents As Teachers program begins to make sure children are emotionally, socially and academically ready for kindergarten, which is important work as we emerge from the pandemic.

The newest program, a regional Diaper Bank, is supplying diapers to families from southern Somerset County to northern Cambria County. About 1 in 3 families fall short by about 25 diapers each month. Through the caring power of community members like you, families are receiving the essentials to help their babies flourish.

Late this summer, we worked with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health to start a pilot program at the Downtown Johnstown Farmer's Market, making SNAP benefits available to buy locally grown, fresh produce. It's a win for local families, and for local farmers. It's a program we hope to grow in coming seasons.

I hope you’ll join us in supporting our 2022 Annual Campaign, making this work possible. United together, we create lasting change.

Sincerely,

K Sig
