Social Change Initiative:  Increase Parental Knowledge of Child Development and Care

United Way of the Laurel Highlands is working to build a civic infrastructure around shared community goals, evidence-based outcomes, and collaborative actions that are sustainable. Our focus is on education, income, and health, because they are the building blocks for a successful life. We partner with over 60 diverse organizations who come together to solve complex social problems in Cambria & Somerset Counties.

Social Change Initiatives include major investments in Early Childhood Development and Parental Engagement evidence-based programs and investments in youth Drug and Alcohol prevention programming:

Nurse-Family Partnership: Evidence-based program which is rated as a “gold standard” and #1 program in the United States. NFP is for low income, first time moms with proven outcomes such as 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect, 50% reduction in language delay, mothers are twice as likely to remain in or enter into a health stable relationship, 43% fewer subsequent pregnancies

Parents as Teachers: Highly rated home-visiting model meting the evidence-based criteria. Proven outcomes include 85% of parents show an increase in knowledge related to developmental milestones, 85% of children receive annual developmental screening, 95% of children have up-to-date immunizations.

Our United Way also invests in emergency financial assistance programs via our Partner Agencies, Catholic Charities and Salvation Army Somerset. Both programs assist families with utility assistance and case management in order to help their family become more stable.
